IRONCUTTER

Elite Vegetative Bermudagrass

From the turfgrass research plots of Enid, Oklahoma emerged a new generation of cold-tolerant vegetative bermudagrass: IronCutter®. Developed through a long-term research and breeding partnership involving turf and forage breeder Dr. Charles Taliaferro, Johnston Seed Co., and MVP Genetics, IronCutter began its evaluation under the experimental designation JSC 2-21-18.

IronCutter entered the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program’s 2013 Bermudagrass Trial as JSC 2-21-18-V and continued through university, field, and management research. The result is an elite vegetative bermudagrass developed around turf quality, establishment, resilience, and broad warm-season performance.

Evaluated Beyond the Breeding Plot

IronCutter’s development has continued through university research, management studies, farm trials, and real-world turf environments. Continued evaluation helps growers and turf managers better understand how the variety responds under different conditions and management programs.

IronCutter® Management Research

University of Georgia researchers evaluated JSC 2-21-18, marketed as IronCutter®, to better understand its response to commonly used postemergence herbicides and plant growth regulators.

The work provides additional information for turf professionals managing IronCutter under real-world maintenance programs and is part of a broader commitment to continued evaluation after a variety moves toward commercialization.

Herbicide Response Multiple postemergence treatments were evaluated for turf color, quality, vegetation index, and injury.
Growth Regulation Plant growth regulator treatments were evaluated for turf quality and measurable growth regulation.
Continued Study Research adds practical management information beyond breeding and initial variety selection.

Independent Evaluation

University research provides additional data on cultivar performance, management response, and adaptation.

Farm Trials

Production Experience

Farm-scale evaluation helps determine how promising genetics establish, grow, recover, and perform in commercial production.

End Users

Real-World Performance

Finished turf environments provide continued feedback on quality, durability, management, and long-term performance.
